5 Skin Care Routines to Try Out This Fall

Your skin is delicate and the more attention you give it, the better it will become. The

same skin care routine that worked in summer cannot be used in fall since the

temperature and weather conditions are quite different. Let us now look at some of the

steps you can include in your daily skin care routine for the fall season.

5 Skin Care Tips for Fall

1. Exfoliate: “Normally it is seen that skin becomes very dry as well as dull after you

spend whole of summer in the sun,” says renowned dermatologist Dr. Joseph Morris. The

main benefit of exfoliation is that it helps in removing skin’s outer layer which becomes

dull during summer. Another advantage of exfoliation is that it assists in unclogging

pores blocked by continuous use of sunscreens.

One thing you need to keep in mind is to exfoliate gently; use any type of mild scrub or

an exfoliating towel. “You should not be over aggressive and only need to exfoliate twice

every week,” says Dr. Morris. If you scrub vigorously, it can result in tearing, scratching

or damage to the skin and you will not get the kind of glow proper exfoliation can

provide.

Another method that is used for exfoliation is use of glycolic acid peels which is also

known as microdermabrasion and is performed by a dermatologist. This method is

quicker as well as effective in removal of skin’s superficial dead layer.

2. Change Cleansers: The skin is generally oilier than normal during summer because of

the heat and humid conditions, thus use of a deep cleansing face wash is quite justified.

But during fall, the weather conditions are much better and heat starts to reduce, so you

need to change your cleanser to a gentler one.

Ideally, it should be a non-soap cleanser, like Cetaphil, which effectively gets rid of dirt

as well as other impurities but does not take away natural oils from your skin. “In case

you have the tendency of getting oily around the T-zone, apply any toner which is oil-free

in that area after cleansing,” advises Dr. Morris.

3. Add Moisturizer: During summer if you were just using a sunscreen and removed

moisturizer from your skin care regime then for fall you will have to bring back the

moisturizer. “Select a basic one which has antioxidants as well as vitamins E, C & A,”

says Dr. Morris. The benefit for you is that these ingredients assist in neutralizing

harmful toxins from sun, and help in preventing any more damage after summer season is

over.

In case you have dry skin, apply the moisturizer on face during night, however, if you

have oily skin, then use moisturizer during night in dry areas only such as the cheeks.

One thing worth mentioning here is that there are several moisturizers which have

rejuvenating ingredients like retinol and glycolic acid. These are useful and give your

skin good luminosity, “but for older skin these ingredients can lead to dryness,” mentions

Dr. Morris. In such a situation, use them on alternate nights so that drying effect can be

negated.

4. Eye Cream: As your skin grows older, fine lines start appearing around the eyes and

exposure to sun and heat further aggravates the situation. Some amount of eye care can

help in making the eye area smooth again.

You need to look for an eye cream which has hyaluronic acid as it can retain moisture in

the skin. “Apply the cream close to the bone that is present under the eye. Avoid applying

it near the lower eye lid since it can result in puffiness,” says Dr. Morris.

5. Fight Brown Spots: After summer is over, many of us find that there are quite a few

dark spots on the face which indicate sun damage. To get rid of these spots use a

bleaching cream that contains hydroquinone. These creams slow down pigment

production inside the skin but it takes almost 6 weeks for them to work. There are several

OTC bleaching creams available that you can use but it is better to use a prescription one.

A Final Note

Thus we can say that if you follow the abovementioned tips, you will be able to keep

your skin in good condition during the transition from summer to fall season and protect

it from damage.
